Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: A Dubai Buyer's Guide

If you are buying a diamond in Dubai, one of the first decisions is lab-grown or natural. Both are real diamonds — the question is which fits your budget, your priorities, and the piece you have in mind. Here is what actually separates them, how they are graded, and how to choose with confidence.

Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond has the same chemical composition, crystal structure, hardness and optical properties as a mined one — both are pure crystallised carbon. The only difference is origin: a natural diamond forms over roughly one to three billion years under intense heat and pressure deep in the earth, while a lab-grown diamond is produced in weeks to months inside a controlled laboratory that recreates those same conditions. Neither a jeweller's loupe nor the naked eye can tell them apart; only specialised equipment used by gemological labs can identify a stone's origin.

How lab-grown diamonds are made

There are two established methods. HPHT (High Pressure, High Temperature) recreates the earth's natural formation conditions, subjecting a small diamond seed to extreme pressure and heat until carbon crystallises around it. CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) places a diamond seed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas, which is heated until carbon atoms bond to the seed layer by layer. Both produce genuine diamond crystal — the method used doesn't affect the stone's grade, only how it grew.

The 4Cs apply to both

Whether natural or lab-grown, every diamond is graded on the same four criteria:

  • Cut: how well the diamond's proportions and facets interact with light — the single biggest factor in a diamond's sparkle, independent of shape.
  • Colour: graded on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown); the closer to colourless, the higher the grade for white diamonds.
  • Clarity: how free the stone is of internal inclusions and surface blemishes, graded from Flawless down to Included. Read our full guide to diamond inclusions for more detail.
  • Carat: the diamond's weight — 1 carat equals 0.2 grams. Carat weight and price do not scale in a straight line; price rises faster at certain thresholds such as 1.00ct and 2.00ct.

The cost difference

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost significantly less than natural diamonds of the same size and quality — the gap has widened as lab-grown production has scaled globally. That lets you choose a larger stone, a higher clarity or colour grade, or a more elaborate setting for the same budget. Natural diamonds, by contrast, draw their value partly from geological rarity: each one took over a billion years to form and is genuinely singular.

Certification matters either way

Whether natural or lab-grown, insist on an independent certificate from IGI (International Gemological Institute) or GIA (Gemological Institute of America) — the two most widely respected labs globally. The report documents the stone's 4Cs, confirms whether it is natural or laboratory-grown, and for natural diamonds notes whether any treatments were used to enhance colour or clarity. Every certified diamond we sell comes with its lab report, so you know exactly what you are paying for before you commit.

Common questions

Will a jeweller be able to tell the difference by looking?

No — not without specialised screening equipment. Reputable jewellers and labs use that equipment as standard practice, which is exactly why an independent certificate matters more than a visual assessment.

Does choosing lab-grown affect resale value?

Generally, lab-grown diamonds hold less resale value than natural diamonds of comparable grade, reflecting the difference in rarity and long-established secondary markets for natural stones. If resale or heirloom value is a priority, natural is usually the stronger choice; if you are buying primarily to wear and enjoy the stone, that difference matters less.

Is a lab-grown diamond "fake"?

No. Simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite are different materials that only resemble diamond. A lab-grown diamond is chemically, physically and optically diamond — graded, certified and sold as such.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose natural if rarity, traditional resale value, and geological origin matter most to you.
  • Choose lab-grown if you want maximum size and sparkle for your budget, or prefer a conflict-free, non-mined option.

Either way, the fundamentals are the same: check the certificate, understand the 4Cs, and buy from a jeweller who will show you the paperwork before you pay.
